How to Start an Email Marketing Career in 2027

Quick answer, before the long version: yes, email marketing is a real, remote, globally paid career in 2027, and no, you do not need a degree to start it. Specialists in the US average around $75,300 a year, managers average around $102,500 (Glassdoor, Payscale) and the people getting hired are the ones who can show results, not the ones with the fanciest CV. The rest of this article is how you actually get from zero to your first client with real stories from people who've done exactly that inside More Than Just Emails.

Is email marketing actually a good career?

See, lemme not waste your time. The answer is YESSSS!

And if your new year resolution is to learn a new skill, work from home or just get a new job…wait lemme grab two chairs and 2 cups of coffee or whatever you drink.

Alright, I am back.

You’ve probably heard “remote work” a hundred times in 2026 alone. Maybe you’ve even heard “email marketing” mentioned somewhere, and that one friend will not stop talking about their new clients. (I can imagine the pressure).

Email marketing is a real career, and shortly I will show you what the salary looks like. The best part is you do not need a marketing degree to start. But nobody has actually sat you down and explained what it is, whether it really pays, and how someone with zero marketing background and zero existing clients actually starts.

Hear me outtt, if you just finished school, freelancing and tired of fighting over the same small jobs, the question underneath is the same: is there a version of this work that actually pays and actually has room for me? There is.

To put perspective to how good of a career this is, every email you’ve ever received was sent by an email marketer even when you get credit alert from your bank. Most of these emails are automated while some are not. In 2027, more brands are jumping on email because of the insane incredible results it gives them.

We’ll unpack all of that as we go.

What email marketing actually is

Email marketing is the practice of writing and sending the emails a business uses to sell, retain, and build a relationship with its customers: welcome sequences for new subscribers, promotional campaigns, abandoned cart reminders for online stores, etc.

Every business with a website and a customer list runs email in one way or another. But most of them don’t know how to do it, or barely do it at all, and that gap right there, is why you should stay with me.

“Is it not like social media?” Hmm, abeg o, no put me for talk with social media people. It is not the same as being a social media manager or a content writer, even though the skills overlap. An email marketer's actual job is understanding how a reader behaves inside their own inbox, writing copy that communicates the intentions of a business to a reader and building the automated sequences that turn a one-time visitor into a repeat customer.

Easy peasy.

“When I started my journey as an email designer, I quickly realized how lonely the space was. Joining More Than Just Emails changed that for me. For the first time, I found people I could talk to, learn from, and share both my challenges and small wins with.”

Why is email marketing important?

Two things make email marketing an unusually good entry point into a paid, remote career, and neither of them depend on where you live. First, it is a skill every business needs and very few people are actually trained in properly.

Read that again because if there’s any update, I’ll share with you here, it’s this one.

Anyone running a business (no matter what they’re selling), hosting an event, or needs to speak to an audience, needs an email marketer. I don’t know about you but that sounds like everyone.

And in Africa, the problem is not many email marketers are experienced; either they learned it badly on the job, or they’re not really doing it at all. This means there’s so much opportunity for you if you want to start a career in email marketing in 2027.

All you need is a place to learn the right skills and the discipline to actually apply it.

  • Every business with a customer list needs it: e-commerce stores, coaches, agencies, software companies, all of it.
  • It is measurable in real numbers, which is exactly what makes a good email marketer easy to justify hiring, and easy to pay well.
  • Work from anywhere in any part of the world. A brand in the US or the UK does not care where you're writing from. Only whether the emails perform.

How much do email marketers actually make?

I hope you have your calculator ready with you because you’ll be doing some conversions.

In 2027, what you earn as an email marketer depends on some specific things, and if nobody breaks that down for you, you end up comparing yourself to the wrong person and drawing the wrong conclusion. How much email marketers are paid depends on three things.

1. The career path

Are you employed full-time inside a company, or are you freelancing, taking on your own clients? Both parties are having different conversations. So, here’s Yusuf, an employee collecting steady salary. And here’s Efua, a freelancer with her own rate per project or per client. Her pay is not set by any company, but by how many clients she can carry and how much each one can pay. Every client is salary week for Efua.

The point is both pay well, but the weight of the credit alert is completely different.

2. Years of experience

More skin in the game doing the work generally means more pay. It's the default assumption everyone brings into this conversation, and most of the time, it holds. Someone with 5 years of experience has more earning power than someone who is just starting.

3. The results

You know when they said be audacious or how did they even say it last year. In 2027, the kingdom of email marketing suffered violence and the violent taketh it by force.

The results you have directly impact the amount of money you make, and this changes the conversation about the years of experience you have. Someone with ten years of experience can end up earning less than someone with only four years, if that four-year person has worked with multiple clients, generated real, provable results, and built a strong portfolio to show for it.

Because brands aren't paying for years, they're paying for whether you can actually generate results for them. On this matter, overtaking is allowed. This is very common with freelancers.

So, what is the exact amount of money email marketers make? Based on research from sources like Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, PayScale, Built In, US 2026 data:

RoleAverage annual payTypical range
Junior Email Marketer$64,860$48,645 to $77,953
Email Marketing Specialist$75,301$57,891 to $98,635
Email Marketing Manager$102,544$79,644 to $133,301
Senior Strategist Manager$113,657$90,000 to $131,000
Freelance Consultant$50/hr$25/hr to $100/hr
Lifecycle or CRM Marketing Specialist$111,009$85,786 to $144,451
Marketing Automation Specialist$82,838$62,000 to $94,000
Director of Email/Lifecycle Marketing$98,635$85,000 to $160,043

If you’re wondering, “how do I make all these money?” Take a deep breath because come to that shortly. If you are thinking about starting your email marketing career in 2027, then you should start as a Junior Email Marketer.

How do you start your email marketing career?

Nobody tells you this part, but starting an email marketing career in 2027 is not one path, it's three, and they are completely different roads.

PathWhat it looks likeBest if
Employed specialistYou join a company as a Junior Email Marketer or Coordinator, learn on a real team, climb toward Specialist then ManagerYou want structure, mentorship, and a steady paycheck while you learn
FreelanceYou find your own clients, price your own work, build a portfolio project by projectYou want to control your time and are willing to hustle the first few months
AgencyYou work under an agency handling multiple client accounts at onceYou want faster reps across more brands without carrying the client relationship yourself

None of these is the “correct” one. But whichever one you pick, you need to face the biggest career paradox…Nobody will hire you without proof, and you can't get proof without someone hiring you first. Omo, my head is already paining me.

The first thing to do is to get the skills, tools and resources that make you an email marketer, and for that, you are in the right place. More Than Just Emails is Africa's email marketing ecosystem, built specifically to give you a launchpad into your email marketing career.

Not a course that hands you a certificate and waves goodbye (we don’t do that here). You learn everything about emails in the Academy from trainers with a combined 150-plus years of experience. Then you chill in the Community with over 160 email marketers already learning and growing. But that’s not all, you have the opportunity to get you into internship roles from our Jobs and Placements.

Why does this matter more than another course? Becauseeee, the goal is never to learn a course but to make real money so that you can get that new apartment, pay your bills, live without borrowing and ultimately be financially independent.

The problem is others train you and wish you luck. More Than Just Emails trains you and walks you to the door and actually staffs them with brands afterward.

“Learning from videos and courses felt confusing, draining, and scattered. I joined because I wanted a community where ideas are shared and questions get direct guidance from someone who has done it before — and that's exactly what I found.”

So where do you actually start, today

If you're the kind of person who wants a plan and not just inspiration, I prepared a 90-day roadmap for you so that you can see what the process looks like. Yes we’re very intentional.

Download the Absolute Beginner's Roadmap to Email Marketing, for free, no commitment, before you decide anything else. And if you're already sold on the ecosystem itself and want the full tour, Inside the MTJE Ecosystem walks you through exactly that.

  • Days 1 to 30: learn the fundamentals properly, in order, list segmentation, subject lines, deliverability, the core sequence types.
  • Days 30 to 60: build your first two portfolio pieces. A rewritten welcome sequence. A mock abandoned cart flow for a store. Real work, even if nobody paid you for it yet.
  • Days 60 to 90: start the employability side. Get in front of brands that need your skills, and people already doing this work, because the path gets shorter the moment you stop doing it alone.

The exact order to learn all of this is laid out step by step in the Absolute Beginner's Roadmap to Email Marketing. You snooze; you lose.

FAQs

How to segment a list properly, how to write a subject line that actually gets opened, the deliverability basics that keep your emails out of spam, and the core sequence types every business needs — welcome flows, abandoned cart flows, promotional campaigns. All of these will be broken down in the Academy.
Don't overthink this one. If you're starting your email marketing career in 2027, learn something built for beginners, like MailerLite or Mailchimp, before you touch anything more complex. Once you're grounded, you can look for tools specifically for e-commerce clients, B2B, coaches, etc.
Like I said earlier, overtaking is allowed. Specialist to Manager is a real jump, and the people making that jump aren't necessarily the ones with the most years in, they're the ones who are hungry enough to get results and kept learning the next layer of the system.
